Kenya, Africa
I'm sure I will have lots to update y'all on as I get to know the people, but one thing I am excited to learn first hand is how friendly and welcoming they are. This is one thing that has been a common theme as I talk to individuals who have visited this area of Africa. Kenyan culture is so different from the culture we're surrounded by everyday in the way they view children with disabilities. Children are expected to contribute to responsibilities around the home and basically provide for themselves when they reach a certain age. Not only are these precious kiddos mentally and physically unable, they are hidden by their families from the public eye with no means of support, education, and help with improving their quality of life. Thank the good Lord for those who have come before me and begun to take it upon themselves to establish rehab centers. There are increasing numbers of children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy and down syndrome who don't have access to necessary care. They spend all day in beds that were once soiled and ridden with bed bugs. All this to say, I thought I knew how large the need over here was but I was wrong. It is so much bigger than me and that makes me excited to see what God can do in a place like Kenya. I expect Him to show up and show out as He always faithfully does.
